Offshore 3D Laser Scanning for Oil & Gas Facilities

Offshore 3D Laser Scanning for Oil & Gas Facilities

About the Client

An offshore Oil & Gas operator requiring high-detail existing-condition capture of multiple offshore platforms in Angola to create dependable digital information for downstream engineering activities.

The assignment involved a remote, safety-critical offshore environment where access was constrained and opportunities for repeat site visits were limited.

The Challenge

Capturing complex offshore facilities presented significant operational and technical challenges. Multiple platforms had to be scanned under strict safety controls, limited access windows and difficult mobilisation conditions.

Given the remote offshore environment, incomplete coverage or missing information could require costly return visits and cause operational disruption. Achieving comprehensive coverage and validating the captured data before leaving the site were therefore critical to the assignment.

The Solution

CS TECH Ai deployed a specialist four-person scanning and survey team to execute high-detail terrestrial laser scanning across the offshore facilities.

The team planned scan positions and coverage around platform access restrictions, safety protocols and line-of-sight constraints. Field validation focused on registration quality and coverage completeness so that potential gaps could be identified before demobilisation.

Over a 17-day offshore capture programme, the team completed approximately 3,000 terrestrial laser scans.

The final deliverables included:

  • Registered E57 point cloud
  • LFM database
  • Registration report
  • Survey-control coordinate list

The Impact

The project achieved complete, validated capture in a remote environment where rework and repeat mobilisation needed to be avoided, providing the client with a dependable digital dataset for downstream engineering use.

By completing approximately 3,000 scans in 17 days with a four-person field team, CS TECH Ai delivered comprehensive existing-condition documentation while working within the access, safety and logistical constraints of an offshore Oil & Gas environment.
