Transmission Asset Management System for 400 kV Substations

Transmission Asset Management System for 400 kV Substations

About the Client

A major power transmission utility in Maharashtra responsible for operating and maintaining critical high-voltage transmission infrastructure, including 400 kV substations.

The utility required a centralized framework for monitoring and controlling substation assets, managing operational information and improving visibility into asset health across its transmission infrastructure.

The Challenge

Managing critical transmission assets across multiple substations requires continuous visibility into equipment condition, events and operational performance.

The requirement was to bring together information from substation systems and intelligent electronic devices into a centralized environment that could support remote monitoring and control, disturbance analysis, asset-health management and operational decision-making.

The programme also needed to strengthen physical monitoring and security at substations while creating a centralized repository of asset and operational information for analysis and maintenance planning.

The Solution

CS TECH Ai supported the implementation of the Maharashtra Transmission Asset Management Centre (MTAMC), integrating multiple substation and enterprise systems into a centralized transmission asset-management environment.

The solution encompassed:

  • Centralized SCADA for remote monitoring and control of substations
  • Monitoring and control of switchgear and bay equipment
  • Integration of IEDs, relays, Bay Control Units and substation data concentrators
  • Remote relay parameterization
  • Disturbance Record (DR) analysis and event-log management
  • Transformer monitoring, including parameters associated with DGA, bushings, partial discharge, LTC and alarms
  • Automated Fault Analysis System
  • Asset Health Management
  • Centralized data warehousing and historical data archiving
  • Visual Monitoring System using field cameras and centralized monitoring
  • Peripheral Intrusion Detection System (PIDS)
  • Remote accessibility, networking, gateways and associated communication systems

The architecture connected the substation environment with the central control centre, enabling operational and asset information to be collected, monitored, analysed and retained for subsequent studies and decision-making.

The Impact

The integrated transmission asset-management environment provided the utility with a centralized view of critical substation assets and operational information, supporting more informed maintenance and operational decisions.

The programme delivered benefits including:

Increased efficiency in asset maintenance
Reduced equipment downtime
A single source of truth across the organisation
Improved resource planning and prediction
Reduced operational costs
Creation of a centralized knowledge base for transmission assets
Asset-health information and analysis to support preventive maintenance

It also strengthened situational awareness by combining centralized SCADA, transformer and asset monitoring, historical operational data, fault analysis and physical-security systems within the wider MTAMC environment.
