Wainganga–Nalganga River-Linking Project

Wainganga–Nalganga River-Linking Project

The Assignment

The Wainganga–Nalganga River-Linking Project was conceived to transfer water from the Gosikhurd (Indira Sagar) Project on the Wainganga River to the Nalganga Project in the Tapi basin, addressing regional water imbalance across the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.

The assignment required multidisciplinary engineering studies, surveys, planning and Detailed Project Report (DPR) preparation for a complex inter-basin water-transfer system designed to extend irrigation while also supporting municipal and industrial water requirements.

Our Approach

CS TECH Ai provided engineering consultancy covering water-resource assessment, surveys, hydraulic studies, infrastructure design and DPR preparation for the river-linking project.

The engagement included:

  • Engineering surveys and investigations
  • Hydrological and flood studies
  • Sedimentation analysis
  • Assessment and interpretation of water-resource data
  • Planning and simulation of water transfer from multiple dams to command areas
  • Hydraulic modelling of piped distribution networks
  • Design of dams, canals, tunnels and lift irrigation systems
  • Engineering design and cost estimation
  • Preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR)

The proposed system envisaged transfer of approximately 1,884 Mm³ of water, with a 388 km canal system, 51 dams, 29 pump houses, 32 lift irrigation schemes, 7 head works and 23.8 km of tunnels.

The project was planned to support an irrigation command area of approximately 404,281 hectares, while also providing water for municipal and industrial requirements across the Vidarbha region.

Impact

Developed the engineering and DPR framework for one of Maharashtra's major river-linking initiatives.
Planned transfer of approximately 1,884 Mm³ of water from the Wainganga system towards the Nalganga basin.
Supported creation of irrigation potential across approximately 404,281 hectares.
Planned an integrated water-transfer system comprising 388 km of canals, 51 dams, 32 lift irrigation schemes and 23.8 km of tunnels.
Supported transfer of water from water-abundant to water-deficit areas to address regional water availability imbalance.
Supported reliable irrigation for regional agricultural development alongside municipal and industrial water requirements.
Contributed to augmentation of existing irrigation projects and distribution systems across the Vidarbha region.
