Heritage Conservation Using BIM-Based Architectural and Structural Modeling

About the Client
A state archaeological department tasked with preserving historically significant monuments through restoration, documentation, and digital archiving. The client sought a modern, technology-enabled approach to support conservation and promote heritage-driven tourism.
The Challenge
The client required accurate as-built documentation of culturally significant monuments for preservation and future restoration. Traditional survey methods were insufficient to capture the structural intricacies of heritage sites, and there was no digital model to guide planning or conservation efforts.
Key challenges included:
- Lack of detailed architectural and structural documentation
- No unified 3D model or spatial database of the monument
- Difficulty assessing structural vulnerabilities or encroachments
- Need for immersive visualization to support tourism and awareness
The Solution
We implemented a comprehensive heritage modeling workflow using 3D reality capture and Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies.
Key components included:
- Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and UAV-based aerial survey
- Integration of TLS and UAV-derived point clouds
- High-accuracy 3D model creation of the monument
- Generation of walkthrough videos and immersive visualizations
- Extraction of as-built 2D drawings and engineering documentation
- BIM model development with details to support future restoration planning
The Impact
The project provided a digital foundation for heritage conservation and future urban development planning:
- Enabled digital restoration and replication of historical structures
- Identified encroachments and degradation using spatial visualization
- Supported detailed engineering estimates and conservation budgeting
- Enhanced heritage tourism through 3D walkthroughs and digital experiences
- Created a permanent digital archive for long-term preservation
