Unified GIS Platform for Utility-Scale Power Distribution Management

About the Client
A public-sector electricity distribution agency participating in a nationwide infrastructure modernization initiative aimed at improving service delivery, reducing distribution losses, and enhancing energy accounting across high-density urban areas.
The Challenge
The client needed a unified digital infrastructure to monitor and manage electrical network assets across 587 towns. Existing data systems were fragmented and lacked spatial intelligence, preventing effective tracking of asset health, energy flow, and operational transparency.
Key challenges included:
- Absence of GIS-based asset visualization for substations, feeders, and transformers
- Legacy data that couldn’t integrate with SCADA/DMS or modern ERP platforms
- No streamlined interface for consumer indexing, metering, and energy auditing
- Difficulty in maintaining updated network maps and incorporating system changes (delta updates)
The Solution
We was appointed as the System Integrator to design, develop, and operationalize a centralized GIS-based IT platform, enabling visibility and integration of distribution assets under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP).
Key solution components included:
- GIS mapping and consumer indexing across the distribution network
- Survey-based asset data collection (up to LT lines and poles)
- Data modeling, ArcFM configuration, and ArcSDE administration
- GIS platform upgrade and legacy data migration to the ESRI stack
- Delta update management for maintaining asset accuracy over time
- Integration with SCADA, DMS, AMR, AMI, ERP, and OMS platforms
- Deployment of web services, interactive maps, and GIS-based dashboards
- Ongoing platform maintenance, user training, and managed services
The Impact
The platform transformed power distribution management across the covered towns with tangible benefits:
- Up to 15% reduction in technical and commercial losses
- Increased revenue through billing optimization and meter data accuracy
- Data-led identification of theft-prone zones and corrective infrastructure upgrades
- Improved visibility of assets and performance metrics across all town networks
- Higher customer satisfaction from faster service response and digital engagement
